HOW to Set up My IRS Account?

Setting up an IRS Individual Online Account requires a quick identity verification process through the IRS's trusted technology provider, ID.me. You will need your Social Security Number (SSN), a valid government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license or passport), and a smartphone or computer with a camera.

Setting up your account involves a few steps:

What You Need  - 4 Things That Almost Everyone Has or Has Access To

1.        Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

2.        A personal email address

3.        A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport)

4.        A smartphone or a webcam-equipped computer

Step-by-Step Setup Process

Type in to your search engine:  https://www.irs.gov/

At the very top of the page, on the blue banner that says IRS, in the upper right corner, click on the Sign In box.

A drop-down menu offers you choices.

A.       If you want to check your tax information as an “Individual”  click on “Individual.”  (Recommended)

B.       If you want to check your tax information as a “Business” click on

“Business”

You are then taken to a webpage that asks you to Create ID.me Account

Once you are on this page, you will follow the instructions provided.  If you ALREADY have an ID.me account, then you can log in to it. Do NOT create a new account.  Having an ID.me account allows you to log into a variety of government accounts.

A.       You will be asked to enter your email address and a strong password.

B.       A  six (6) digit code or confirmation link will be sent to that same email to verify that it is, indeed, your email.

C.      You will then be asked to set Up MFA (Multi-Factor Authentication): Choose your preferred method to secure your account (e.g., receiving a text message code on your phone).

D.      You will then be asked to “Verify Your Identity.”

You can choose either the Self-Service option or a Video Chat Agent.

1.)     Self-Service: Follow the text prompt sent to your phone to take photos of the front/back of your ID and record a short video selfie to verify you are the document's owner.

2.)     Video Chat: If you choose this option, you will be connected with a live agent to show your physical documents.

Link to the IRS: Once your identity is verified, enter your SSN. Finally, click "Allow" to authorize ID.me to share your verified identity information with the IRS.

Follow the Instructions on the IRS site.  You may be asked to re-input some of the same information, create a username and password and possibly be asked for tax information, such as filing status.
